Craig General Hospital
Craig General Hospital is located on a piece
of the homestead of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Friend, who donated the land in
the early 1960s. Funds for construction came from a federal Hill-Burton
grant of $245,000 and a Craig County bond issue of $250,000. At opening
in 1963, Craig General Hospital operated with 32 beds and 70 employees,
contributing a $149,647 annual payroll to the community. Today, the facility
is licensed for 62 beds and employs over 270. The annual payroll now
approaches $5 million.
Craig General Hospital is operated by a public
trust authority, the Craig County Hospital Authority, whose Board is
appointed by the County Commissioners. Craig General Hospital is a self-sustaining, not for profit hospital and receives no contributions from
the county other than a small amount for charity care.
