“The gift of the good earth on which this hospital stands represents the substance of the past being placed to work for the benefit of those whose needs it will serve.”

Craig General Hospital

Craig General Hospital is located on a piece of the homestead of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Friend, who donated the land in the early 1960s. Funds for construction came from a federal Hill-Burton grant of $245,000 and a Craig County bond issue of $250,000. At opening in 1963, Craig General Hospital operated with 32 beds and 70 employees, contributing a $149,647 annual payroll to the community. Today, the facility is licensed for 62 beds and employs over 270. The annual payroll now approaches $5 million.

Craig General Hospital is operated by a public trust authority, the Craig County Hospital Authority, whose Board is appointed by the County Commissioners. Craig General Hospital is a self-sustaining, not for profit hospital and receives no contributions from the county other than a small amount for charity care.
